"We are intruders into this system, and I have a sneaking feeling that one of these planets is inhabited by hostile aliens..."
Kyle Barlor is captain aboard the spaceship Voyager on its exploration of the farther reaches of the Universe in a ceaseless hunt for minerals and chemicals badly needed by Earth and its space colonies in the solar system.
With these resources dwindling not just on Earth, but her surrounding colonies, there is little choice but to explore further into deep space.
Voyager is nine hundred light years from Earth’s solar system…
Kyle’s mission was to find the Brontus Major Constellation and search it for any metals that may be used.
The spearhead through space, carried out by men such as those aboard Voyager, never saw the fruits of their work. They would merely locate the planets containing sufficient metals and then push on to leave the transport freighters to strip them.
A seemingly endless mission…
That is, until, an uncharted planetary system appears between them and the Brontus Major Constellation.
Why does it not show up on their scanners?
And what are the strange missile silos doing around the planetary system?
Kyle decides their only course of action is to send out a search party to try to find out what forms of life are there.
However, when they lose contact with the search party they realise something must be wrong.
So far from Earth, Kyle Barlor is the only hope of ever returning home for the crew aboard the Voyager, but even he is beginning to feel out of his depth.

This space exploration/alien contact story is written in a straightforward style that is easy to read and flows. I agree that the ending is the weakest part of this tale. Ending stories is hard, from movies to television to literary works many are challenged with ending their stories in a satisfying way. Still, this story builds a compelling mystery, star trek style, that kept me intrigued.Product details

Nightmare Planet eBook Donald S Rowland Reviews
Unfortunately the technology described in this book is not what it should be. I expect in a future in which we are traveling between stars there will be no button's to push or levers to pull. No big equipment packs to lug around. Mostly AI's and voice commands and not many people on board.
The plot is a mix between an old star trek episode, including the steely eyed Captain and crusty engineer, and many other generic plots.
And finally the dialogue is just not very good. Kind of old star trek again.
Too bad, I had high hopes.
I was very pleasantly surprised when reading this book. It is well written with an interesting story line. Unfortunately, the ending was, IMO, unworthy of the first 99% of the book and I finished it with a sense of disappointment.
Good story overall but the characters are rather one dimensional and reads like a 50's B movie. The author is very heavy handed and liberal with the use of exclamation! It's hard to tell when a character is excited or passive.
The battles herein aren't between planets but rather on one newly found. Sage advice from old adages from the mother planet does not necessarily apply to creatures with a serious hunger for a trace element your ship doctors have yet to discover. Kinda puts a crinkle in normal space/planetary ops don'cha think!
