Tobruk eBook Peter FitzSimons Reviews

Lightweight. A yarn.
An excellent overview with personal insights
Thoroughly enjoyed this book, written with a strong Australian slant on all aspects of the war in the Middle East. This book has been well researched and gives a broad account of all the participates' interests in this theatre of the war. Fitzsimons brings a personal insight to the book by referring to the families of the men on the frontline and their own emotional battles at home by interspersing the book with letters to and from home. Sometimes heartbreaking, sometimes uplifting this book helps you understand what it meant to be 'in the thick of it' and try to survive, both from a German and Allies point of view.
OK.
An even handed attempt to portray the events leading up to and surrounding the Tobruk battle in WW2.
Seems to be clinically assessed and goes beyond just the Australians at war type story.

Well worthwhile.
Another brilliant book from the master teller Peter Fitzsimons, I have known the story of the siege at Tobruk for very many years, now I have found out that I knew nothing at all really, Peter really investigates so many facts of the story behind the story that it seems that once you read one of his books on history there is nothing more to know they are so thoroughly researched, he doesn't leave anything to guesswork, you will be amazed at the facts he has uncovered. If you want to know the whole story about the siege from the allies point of view and the siege from Rommel's point of view there is only one book to read and this is it.
As a student of military history I especially appreciate the way FitzSimmons honors the soldier's story. If you like the way Stephen Ambrose tells a story you will like this author and Tobruk.
A wonderful, stirring story of the guts of the ordinary Aussie soldier. Tough and steadfast in the face of overwhelming odds. They paid an enormous toll both during and after the war. Rest In Peace.
